NEWS RELEASE: NOACA Announces Development of a Northeast Ohio Regional Climate Action Plan and Upcoming Public Engagement Activities

Plan to address strategies that mitigate climate change, reduce GHG

Post Date:11/17/2022 1:08 PM

CLEVELAND (November 17, 2022) – The Northeast Ohio Areawide Coordinating Agency (NOACA) is developing a regional climate action plan for Northeast Ohio. The Climate Action Plan, or CAP, will integrate local initiatives and identify opportunities to develop programs and policies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, build resilience, and enhance equity at the regional scale.

NOACA along with its partners, The Cleveland Foundation and The Gund Foundation, publicly introduced a virtual regional Climate Action Summit in March 2022 to outline the planning strategies and development of the plan. The agency has since partnered with ICLEI-Local Governments for Sustainability and more than 50 regional organizations as technical advisors to help make the dream of a cleaner and healthier future for Northeast Ohio a priority to assess resiliency, risk, and region-specific climate goals.

The regional Climate Action Plan establishes several major components:

    • Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions Inventory Report
    • Climate Risk and Vulnerability Assessment (CRVA)
    • Climate Mitigation Strategy
    • Climate Adaptation Strategy
    • Climate Action Plan Final Review

Northeast Ohio residents will be able to access information and data at eNEO2050.com and give input during the climate mitigation and adaptation strategy phases to support the proposed emission reduction targets of 63.3% by 2030 and net-zero by 2050. An introduction to the CAP video can be found here. Engagement activities are planned from December 2022 through April 2023.

The Climate Action Plan is a priority project under NOACA’s Long-Range Plan, a comprehensive document that guides Northeast Ohio's major infrastructure investments and vision for the future. The final regional Climate Action Plan will be presented at the NOACA’s June 2023 Board of Directors Meeting for approval.
