You can participate in Ozone Action Days by doing the following:

  • Ride the bus (Greater Cleveland RTA 621-9500; LAKETRAN 800-400-130; METRO 762-0341; Lorain County Transit 800-225-7703; Portage Area RTA 678-1287; Brunswick Transit Alternative 273-5855; Kent State Campus Bus Service (672-RIDE).
  • RIDESHARE! or vanpool (800-825-RIDE).
  • Walk or bike whenever possible.
  • Combine trips and eliminate unnecessary trips.
  • Refuel vehicles before or after an Ozone Action Day. If you must refuel on an Ozone Action Day, wait until after 7:00 p.m.
  • Don't top off that tank. Make certain gasoline caps are tightly sealed. Spilled gasoline (hydrocarbons) evaporates directly into the air we breathe.
  • Drive smoothly. Avoid "jack rabbit" starts that waste fuel and emit more hydrocarbons.
  • Delay lawn cutting and other yard maintenance activities until after an Ozone Action Day. A gasoline-powered lawn mower produces as much ozone-forming hydrocarbons in one hour as a car driven 50 miles. If you must do your mowing on Ozone Action Days, wait until after 7:00 p.m.
  • Don't use charcoal lighter fluid, solvent-based paints or degreasers on Ozone Action Days. If necessary, wait until after 7:00 p.m.
