Rapids Road Bridge Rehabilitation in Troy Township

The Governing Board approved the following project for inclusion in the TIP by adopting Resolution No. 2000-066 on 10/13/00.

Sponsor: Geauga County Engineer
Estimated Total Cost: $250,000
Proposed Source of Federal Funds: County Engineers Association of Ohio (CEAO)

History/Background
The proposed project is located on Rapids Road (at mile marker 4.97), over the Bridge Creek, in Troy Township.  The bridge is located on a section of highway, functionally classified as a local road and maintained by the county.

Current Conditions:
The existing steel beam bridge is 60 feet long, 24 feet wide. The bridge was installed in 1971. The sufficiency rating is 66.1. The structure is considered "structurally deficient".

The bridge is currently rated to accept legal loading, but may need to be posted for a reduction in the near future.

The local zoning is residential. The legal speed limit is 55 mph.  There are no existing bicycle lanes in the area. The average daily traffic is 1,030 (1999).

Proposed Improvement:

The proposed project involves the rehabilitating the superstructure. The abutments will be rehabilitated to accept the new 30-foot wide bridge deck.  A concrete abutment will be provided.  The new superstructure will include galvanized steel beams with a concrete deck or composite deck. The total cost is estimated to be $250,000.

The project will be designed  (using Geauga County local standards) and administered by the sponsor. The service life of the proposed project is estimated at 30 years. The sponsor anticipates minimal environmental impact.

Staff Assessment (Summary):

  • Federal Guidelines recommend a 4-foot wide shoulder on roads with speed limits over 50 mph, for experienced bicycle riders.
  • The County Engineers Association of Ohio (CEAO) has approved this project for the Local Bridge Funds in SFY 2004.  The sponsor wants to advance the project to SFY 2002.  Unless the CEAO approves the advancement of the project, it will be programmed by NOACA for SFY 2004.
