Major Investment Study

Major Investment Studies (MIS) are initiated for significant highway and/or transit transportation investments. During the MIS process, local governments, planners and project sponsors explore and analyze alternatives that can improve mobility and safety where the proposed improvement is located.

Some alternatives examined during the MIS process might include:

  • constructing high-occupant vehicle lanes,
  • realigning roads or transit track,
  • adding interchanges,
  • extending rail lines,
  • increasing transit options corridor-wide to address mobility needs, and
  • constructing general-purpose lanes.
Once a study has been completed, planners analyze the data to decide on the next steps.
