Preventive Maintenance on I-71 in Medina County

History/Background: This project is included in ODOT District 3’s 2012 Pavement Program.

Current Conditions: I-71 is functionally classified as an interstate. I-71is three lanes in each direction, with lanes twelve feet (12’) wide, and inside and outside shoulders ten feet wide. The pavement width is 56 feet in each direction. The legal speed limit is 65 miles per hour. The average daily traffic is 62,350 vehicles per day with nine percent trucks (2007 count).

Proposed Project: This project involves preventive maintenance along 10.90 miles of I-71, from 0.09 mile north of Ridgewood Road to the Medina/Cuyahoga County Line in Montville Township, Medina Township, Brunswick Hills Township and Brunswick. The total cost of the project is estimated to be $3,150,425. Ninety percent ($2,835,383) of the construction cost will be funded with Interstate Maintenance (IM) funds. ODOT will fund the ten percent ($315,043) non-federal share. The project has an estimated award date of October 3, 2011.

Staff Comment (Summary):
Plan and Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) Team:
  • This project is consistent with NOACA’s Connections 2030 Goal # 3 (Preserve and Improve the Efficiency of the Transportation System) and ODOT’s Access Ohio 2004 - 2030 Goal # 4 (System Preservation).
  • Recommend committee and public review in order to obtain comments.
Regional Transportation System (RTS) Team:
  • According to NOACA’s Regional Pavement Management System, projected pavement condition ratings (PCRs) for this section of I-71 for 2008 are 92-94 (very good). Projected PCRs for 2012 are 78-82 (good condition).
