Estimated Total Cost: $3,515,000
Proposed Source of Federal Funds: Federal Transit Administration (FTA)

History/Background:
Laketran's original state fiscal year (SFY) 2001 capital program is listed in the NOACA SFY 2000 – 2003 Transportation Improvement Program.  The FTA formula funding allocations were announced and Laketran has revised their program to reflect these allocations.

Current Conditions:
A number of vehicles have reached the end of their useful life (defined by FTA as100,000 miles or four years, whichever comes first). A variety of office and shop equipment  needs to be replaced. Vehicles need routine maintenance. Various passenger waiting areas need to be improved for comfort, safety and convenience.  Laketran's current communications system was installed in the 1970s. It is an analog system used for voice and data transmissions. Laketran operates over this county-wide 900 mhz trunked radio system, shared by all public safety, school bus and transit forces in the Lake County.

Proposed Project:

The program includes the purchase vehicles, replacing vehicles which have reached the end of their useful life. This includes up to twenty (20) replacement vans ($1,240,000) and four (4) 30' buses ($900,000) for local fixed routes and neighborhood circulator routes.

The program also involves the purchase of shop and office (support) equipment ($125,000), bus shelters ($15,000), vehicle preventive maintenance (capital) items ($660,000) and radio equipment ($550,000). Additionally, the program includes the purchase of bicycle racks ($25,000) to be installed on all local fixed route buses in Laketran's fleet.

Laketran's proposed (revised) 2001 capital program is 22% lower in cost than their original program although the rolling stock replacements will be increased.
