I-76/I-80 Corridor Study
The I-76/I-80 Corridor Study extends 78 miles from the I-71/I-76 interchange in Medina County to where I-80 crosses the Ohio/Pennsylvania border in Trumbull County. Since these highways were first constructed in the 1950s and 1960s:
- the area has seen major growth in new communities and businesses, particularly adjacent to the Interstates;
- traffic has increased by 37.4 percent in the past ten years;
- truck traffic has increased and will continue to do so at a faster rate than automobile traffic because trucks use the I-76 and I-80 as through-routes between locations outside Northeast Ohio; and
- segments of the corridor have interchanges that are too close together, contributing to congestion and safety concerns.
The purpose of the I-76/80 Corridor Study was to:
- identify capacity and roadway deficiencies,
- recommend a set of safe and cost-effective improvements to eliminate or minimize these deficiencies, and
- identify improvements needed through 2025.The proposed improvements must consider the access needs of communities and activities in the study area while minimizing the environmental impacts.
Due to the length of this study corridor, four agencies shared responsibility to provide overall study direction:
