NOACA Bicycle and Pedestrian Count Program
Purpose of the Program
With the generous help of volunteers, NOACA conducts bicycle and pedestrian counts throughout northeast Ohio during the months of May and September annually. These counts are conducted in order to accomplish a variety of goals:
- Gain insight on current levels of biking and walking in the region, as well as trends over time
- Investigate what factors have the strongest relationship with increased biking and walking within the region
- Improve prioritization of multimodal projects
NOACA participates in the National Bicycle and Pedestrian Documentation Project.
Count Data
Count data can be downloaded in PDF and Excel formats.
Volunteers
NOACA is in need of volunteers to conduct bike counts throughout Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake, Lorain, and Medina Counties. Volunteers will be asked to count passing bicyclists for two hour periods, while sitting outside, at various road and trail intersections on May 7th, 8th, 9th, and 11th. All materials necessary to conduct the counts will be provided, and travel costs to and from the count location will be reimbursed. The volunteer must be responsible for their own transportation to the count location. New this session, all volunteers will be provided a $40 gift card to the northeast Ohio bicycle shop of their choice!
To sign up as a volunteer, please read the instructions below and then fill in the survey. Volunteers will also be asked to sign the liability form once it is confirmed they have been assigned a location. Thank you for your interest and help with this effort.

Instructions for signing up as a volunteer
Volunteers are asked to sign up for an orientation session and at least one counting session. Preference will be given to those available for one orientation session and both count sessions, but volunteers available for one orientation session and one count session are also greatly appreciated. In order to sign up for a count session, volunteers should be available both days, and able to arrive at their location on time and count for the entire two hour period. The session dates and times include:

- Wednesday May 1st at 12:00 p.m.
- Thursday May 2nd at 6:00 pm

Volunteers will be asked to list their top four preferences for count locations for each session. If a location listed is convenient for you, but you are unable to count at that location during the specified dates and times, please contact Marc Von Allmen (mvonallmen@mpo.noaca.org) to count at that location on a different date or combination of dates. We will do our best to match volunteers with their preferred locations. Preliminary count location assignments will be completed and provided in advance of the orientation session.
