Do you consider your community a friendly community? How about a Bicycle-FriendlyCommunity? If your community is taking action to make bicycle transportation
safe and convenient, and promoting bicycle events like bike-to-work days, then it may qualify to become a nationally designated "Bicycle Friendly Community".
The League of American Bicyclists initiated the Bicycle Friendly Community (BFC) program to recognize communities that actively promote the bicycle as a transportation vehicle. The program provides certification, public recognition, and motivation for municipalities that support better bicycling, and provides others with incentives for attaining the same distinction. Communities that earn the Bicycle Friendly
Community designation receive color roadway signs to place at the municipal borders and a plaque, indicating that the community is bicycle friendly.
A few years ago NOACA conducted a Bicycle Friendly Community campaign during which Avon Lake (Lorain County), Mentor (Lake County) and Oberlin (Lorain County) earned the Bicycle Friendly Community designation. Could your community be next? NOACA encourages other communities in the region to join these cities and become Bicycle Friendly Communities (BFC). NOACA offers assistance to interested communities and funding for a community celebration when the BFC designation is earned.
To qualify as a BFC, community officials must send the League of American Bicyclists documentation that they meet specific criteria. Contact us for more information about the program or to obtain an application!
